Speleo Technics FX3 Caving Light Speleo Technics FX3 Caving Light
Ref: FX3001, EAN:
The FX3 is arguably the most robust caving light available. Although there are many lighter alternatives this lamp will stand up to almost anything. The lamp head can be sealed making it useable for cave diving*. The FX3 is also the primay choice for group use.

It is available as a standard "bulb only" light with a main halogen and reserve pilot bulb, or as a halogen/LED hybrid with either 7 or 14 LED arrays.

* Fresh water only.

SEPTEMBER 2008: The FX3 is now discontinued due to European legislation banning the sale of NiCd batteries.

THESE INSTRUCTIONS ARE NOT INTENDED TO BE A REPLACEMENT FOR THOSE SUPPLIED BY THE MANUFACTURER. THEY ARE ONLY HERE TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION. ALWAYS REFER TO THE MANUFACTURERS INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE USE.

CHANGING BULBS:
Disconnect the lamp head from the FX3 battery before changing bulbs to reduce the danger of short circuits occurring in the headpiece.

BATTERY CARE:
Although the cells in the FX3 are closely matched, for capacity, variations can occur after long service so it is advisable to AVOID COMPLETE DISCHARGE. As soon as the lamp starts to dim SWITCH OFF. If you don't the weakest cell can be "pushed" too far by the stronger cells as they continue to discharge and damage can occur resulting in reduced capacity, charge retention of even failure.

CHARGING:
15hrs from flat. Top-up charging with an occasional full cycle is the preferred charging regime. Top-up charging is easy to calculate if you have the standard halogen FX3 as it's time used * 1.5 but if you have the LED version it's a little more complicated. The following will only work if you've stuck to using the LED's with the occasional quick "spot" with the halogen but if you've been switching between the two for any length of time it would not be practical to work out.

Basically, it's the percentage of capacity used * the same percentage of a full charge:-
(((100/M)*L)*0.15)=C
M = max duration (50 for the 7LED or 25 for the 14LED)
L = Hours used (LED's)
C = Hours to charge

To take into account of longer use of the halogen it would have to be:-
(((100/M)*L)*0.15)+(H*1.5)=C
where H = Hours used (halogen)

Stuff all that! If you're a caver and not a mathematician with a stopwatch do what we do and take an educated guess erring on the side of caution by adding a bit. It does not need to be precise and no harm will be done to the battery by occasional moderate overcharging. If the lamp has not been used recently it is better to give a full 15 hour charge to be on the safe side. This particularly applies as your lamp gets older. However consistent heavy over charging is one of the very few ways in which it is possible to damage NiCd batteries. DO NOT charge the battery below freezing point without prior consultation with Speleo Technics.

STORAGE:
Short-term storage of the FX3 is simple. just disconnect the cable from the battery, clean the contacts with plain water if dirty, dry and forget!. For longer term storage a full charge is an advantage.

SAFETY VENT:
The unique Speleo Technics safety vent (pat. app. for) can be seen as a small red plastic plug in the base of the battery and it should only be replaced with the type supplied by Speleo Technics for the purpose. This seals a petroleum jelly filled vent which is connected to the individual safety valves on each of the cells within the battery. if a cell should vent the plug and petroleum jelly are ejected allowing the gas to escape harmlessly to atmosphere. This may very occasionally happen when charging especially when a battery has been over discharged or stored for a long period fully discharged. If this occurs simply melt a little petroleum jelly over a pan of hot water, pour into the vent hole and replace the plug to reseal. If the plug refuses to stay in due to trapped jelly or air a SHORT piece of fuse wire between plug and vent will allow excess petroleum jelly to escape.

PRODUCT AVAILABILITY: We source many of our products from very small manufacturers who don't have registered bar codes. Although technically possible it is impractical for us to operate an automated stock control system. We would be working for the machine rather than the machine working for us and there aren't enough hours in the day to do it. However, it is rare for us to be out of stock of anything and we do our best keep our site updated accordingly. If we know we're out of stock of something we remove the "add" button or put a note against the item. In the rare event we sell out of something between web site updates or we miss something, we would let you know, giving you the choice of keeping the item on order or cancelling. If you would like to check availability of an item prior to ordering either give us a call or drop us a line by email. E: info@hitchnhike.co.uk

YOUR SECURITY: We use the Actinic Payments System powered by CreditCall. This is 100% PCI DSS compliant and 3D secure. Actinic Payments meets all current banking security standards including PCI DSS, which is now a requirement for all UK businesses to accept credit card and debit card payments. It also supports anti-fraud options such as AVS, CV2 and 3D Secure. Your card details are not held anywhere in our system.
