Scanning and the different types of scan
Some PMR446 radios have the ability to "scan" in one form or another. Scanning can be useful in a number of situations. If you're managing different groups of people who are operating independently of each other on different channels it allows you to keep an ear out and communicate with any of them. Alternatively you could be somewhere when something goes wrong, you need help and your phone is out of coverage. If you can hear another group the likelihood is they will probably be able to hear you. A scenario that has happened on more than one occasion! You'd be lucky if someone else was about, but any chance is better than none. Scanning is also good if you're just downright nosy!

Different radios scan in different ways and if scanning is something you require it's wise to check what type of scan a particular radio has because it might not do what you want.

> Basic Scan:
Usually this will scan through the 8 PMR446 frequencies (channels) and will pick up any transmissions from radios set with corresponding CTCSS* / DCS* Group Codes*. This type of scan is good if you've split a large group into smaller sub-groups on different channels.

> Open Scan:
If a radio has an "open scan" it will monitor all channels but ignore any CTCSS / DCS coding so if someone's transmitting you'll hear them even if they're on a completely different CTCSS/DCS code. This lets you know who else is operating in your area but not a lot of good if you want to contact them for any reason as their radios will only receive your transmission if yours has a matching code and you have now way of knowing what it is.

> Open Scan with CTCSS/DCS Decode:
Radios equipped with CTCSS/DCS Decode will not only display the code of the incoming signal but will temporarily set the internal code of the radio to match allowing instant communication.

PRODUCT AVAILABILITY: We source many of our products from very small manufacturers who don't have registered bar codes. Although technically possible it is impractical for us to operate an automated stock control system. We would be working for the machine rather than the machine working for us and there aren't enough hours in the day to do it. However, it is rare for us to be out of stock of anything and we do our best keep our site updated accordingly. If we know we're out of stock of something we remove the "add" button or put a note against the item. In the rare event we sell out of something between web site updates or we miss something, we would let you know, giving you the choice of keeping the item on order or cancelling. If you would like to check availability of an item prior to ordering either give us a call or drop us a line by email. E: info@hitchnhike.co.uk

YOUR SECURITY: We use the Actinic Payments System powered by CreditCall. This is 100% PCI DSS compliant and 3D secure. Actinic Payments meets all current banking security standards including PCI DSS, which is now a requirement for all UK businesses to accept credit card and debit card payments. It also supports anti-fraud options such as AVS, CV2 and 3D Secure. Your card details are not held anywhere in our system.
