Price:    £164.00  Including  VAT at 15%

SPEC:
Weight without batteries:640g
Weight with batteries:740g+/-
Max output:67 Lumens (14 LED max setting)
Batteries:4 x AA Alkaline or NiMh
Main Bulb:3W Halogen (or optional 1W LED)
Waterproof:IPX8 (see note at the bottom of this page)

Performance: Because the 14 LED module is regulated and has variable output the spec sheets for these are complex and to be honest difficult to convert into reality. So, to sum it up....

The Halogen: Initially this produces a 60m beam but this soon drops off and is soon out shone by the LED module on it's brightest setting. The halogen also drains the batteries quickly, in under 4h. Our advice would be to fit the optional 1W LED module in its place.

The 14LED Module: This can be switched at any time between any of its three output levels, providing a good flood with a central diffused beam.

Low:<15m beamA comfortable amount of light to cave on and lasts for ages.
Middle:<25m beamFor general caving this is the setting you'd use most, providing a good amount of light but still giving good duration. You'll see pretty much all there is to see on this setting.
High:<34m beamLoads of light! good for illuminating large chambers, passages and pitches.
Halogen:<60m beamInitially this produces a 60m beam but this soon drops off and is soon out shone by the LED module.
Optional 1W LED:50-60m beamBetter than the halogen, runs <10h and better for spotting.

Duration: If you're using good quality alkaline, or high capacity (2500mAh) NiMh AA cells, and cave most of the time on the middle setting, sometimes on high, and keep it on low in crawls, sitting about or waiting, you'll easily do 10 hours without having to change the batteries. With care, using the low setting more of the time, more than 24 hours can be achieved.

Petzl 1w LED Insert for Duo Petzl 1w LED Insert for Duo
Ref: E61700-4
NEW: A 1w LED to replace the main Halogen bulb and is ideal for spotting as it produces a tight 50m+/- beam when focused. It will run for 8 - 10h depending on the type and capacity of battery used.

NOTE: This module will NOT work with Petzl Duo's manufactured before January 1st 2004 due to the polarity not being standardised.

IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ
Waterproof ratings can be a bit misleading.... It would be a fair assumption that a lamp rated to IPX7 1m depth or IPX8 5m depth could be used for caving, worn through the odd duck or short shallow sump. They should never fog up, suffer condensation, and certainly shouldn't leak when being washed off in the sink or with a hose. But.... in the real world, water ingress can occur.

The ratings are based upon static pressure and rely on perfectly seated o-rings that are perfectly clean. They do not take into account the dynamic effects of movement or the ingress of dirt from the caving environment etc.

The only lamps that will reliably handle submersion are those rated to diving depths, and even these can suffer fogging of condensation due to changes in temperature on the lens. The smallest amount of dirt, hair or fibre on an o-ring or in its seat can cause leakage. This is why the best diving lamps have multiple o-rings.

To sum it up, lamps like the IPX8 Duo are perfectly good enough for caving, and if o-rings are kept clean and lubricated with silicone grease, will handle ducks and short term submersion. If they do fog up or suffer any ingress water, open them up, let them dry out, clean all the seals and put it back together.
