We use them out on the hill, kayaking and all sorts of other things but be aware that the the battery / charger systems supplied with these, and for that matter, any other cheap consumer radios are not really that good. They work OK to begin with but the overall life expectancy of the battery is short and the batteries are not covered under warranty. The problem is that the chargers are basic and don't provide any kind of battery management. They just charge, and keep charging even if the battery is full. Professional grade radios use NiMh or Li-Ion batteries with smart chargers which can be used for top up and maintenance charging, but they are considerably more expensive starting at around five times the price. Good if you really need top performance but over the top for most leisure activities. My advice for anyone using cheaper consumer radios is to swap over to using conventional alkaline batteries for less frequent use or standard AA/AAA NiMh rechargeable batteries if you're going to use them a lot.
